Introduction to Interior Design

interior design

There’s no such thing as bad design. Just different tastes. But we do have some decorating rules we try to follow each time we decorate a room or a home. We consider them our “dos” and “don’ts” of design.

Today we will give you our list in case you are in need of some direction in designing a room in your home. First we will start with the don’ts:

Bold Colors

When designing a room, do not use more than one bold color in the design. You can choose one bold color but then you should complement it with more-subtle tones and colors throughout the rest of the room and décor.

You should also maintain the same color palette across an open concept room or living space. This creates cohesiveness.

Short Curtains

Be sure the curtains you purchase touch the ground. You want the curtains to extend from the curtain rod to the floor beneath the window for a more flowing and luxurious look in the room.

Small Rugs

If you purchase a rug for the room be sure it is big enough to extend across the entire seating area in the room. This means the front legs of all of the furniture in the seating area should sit on top of the rug. If the rug isn’t big enough for this you should consider purchasing a larger rug for the room.

Mix & Match

Do not be afraid to mix different patterns and textures throughout the décor of a room. You can use as many as two or three textures and patters in a room.

Don’t forget to consider height and scale during the design process. Test different height lamps, chairs and vases throughout the design.

Coffee Table

Be sure to add a little flair and fun to your coffee table. There is an opportunity to combine fashion and function on this piece of furniture that is often wasted during the design process. You can use vases, candles, flowers or books for decorating the surface of a coffee table or end table.

Avoid traditional artwork and mirrors and instead consider more modern and bold artwork throughout your design. This is a chance to be bold and creative in your living space.

Silver & Gold

You should mix and match silver and gold tones throughout your design. These tones are luxurious and complement each other. This is a popular design trend in 2017.

Mirrored Furniture

Mirrored furniture reflects light and creates the appearance of a much larger and more open living space.

Neutral Wall Paint

Leave the bold colors for décor items like pillows and decorative accents and furniture and reserve the neutral colors for your wall. This will allow much more customization and the opportunity to redecorate easier and more often.

Treat Your Furniture

Invest in stain protectant for the furniture in your living space. A stain on furniture can be very distracting and ruin an entire design if it becomes a visual focal point of the room.

You can also mix and match the fabrics of the furniture in the room.

Be sure the fireplace in a room is the focal point of the room. You can use the space for a bold painting or various decorative accents.

If you remember these designing dos and don’ts during your next home remodel or redesign you will be on your way to a beautiful living space for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
